Blocked Storm-Water Passage

The trouble with the Rambla de Vizcarra when reaches the urban area of Calahonda, it is channeled beneath the length of Calle Aurora and it fills up with silt, choking it.

This is what caused the 2011 flooding – it couldn’t handle the heavy downpour further inland that raged down to the coast, flooding houses, a school, and sweeping away vehicles.

Town Hall workers have tried clearing the underground passage but hit a wall of silt 40 metres in that their municipal machinery was unable to reach in order to clear it. Furthermore,  although the Town Hall lacks the budget and specialised machinery to clean it, the Junta insists that urban underground maintenance is a municipal responsibility.

Whilst the Junta fumbles around trying to find alternative funding (asking the Central Government, for example), locals live with trepidation that one day the heavens will break open and a deluge will charge down the barranco again, causing the same kind of damage as in 2011… or perhaps worse.

There is a plan, although not the budget, to double capacity by building a new 7-meter-wide channel, increasing its flow capacity from 26 to 37 cubic meters per second.

This plan lost possible funding because there were contracting committee issues (when are there ever not where committees are involved), causing the town to miss the deadline to receive EU Next Generation funds.
