Los Nórdicos kickstart activities in September-October every year, when most members come back after spending the summer up north.

Here comes a short presentation of who we are. Los Nórdicos AHN-CN (Asociación Hispano-Nórdica/Club Nórdico) is a cultural, social, and non-profit association, that is independent of religious and political affiliations.
Its purpose is to foster mutual understanding and friendship between the local community, Spain and people from the Nordic countries, organise a variety of activities, and provide collaboration and information to and among its members.
Los Nórdicos is part of the AHN (Asociación Hispano-Nordica), which comprises six independent local chapters in various locations along Costa del Sol and Costa Tropical. The first association was founded in 1968 for Costa del Sol by Prince Carl Bernadotte.
Two Nordic organisations were previously active in Almuñecar: the informal Club Nórdico, dating back to the 1970s, and AHN de la Costa Tropical, registered in Andalucía since 2004. These merged in February 2011, adopting the current statutes and format. There is also a Danish association in Almuñecar, separate from Los Nórdicos
By summer 2026, Los Nórdicos had 560 members; the vast majority from Sweden, and from Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. Around 10 percent are permanent residents of the Costa Tropical, while the rest spend the winter season or shorter periods here, primarily in Almuñécar.
We care about the local community and encourage our members to shop locally and support local artisans and service providers. From October to the end of April we hold meetings every Wednesday, featuring either a cultural activity or a presentation.
Twice a year, we invite a representative from the municipality for a discussion or to provide information about their operations. Some time ago, Maria del Carmen Reinoso, in charge of Social Services, informed us about her portfolio and got a lot of questions about options to get support for elderly who live here. She emphasised the need for everyone to:
• Learn Spanish (even if basic knowledge)
• Register with the Municipality (empadronarse)
• Apply early for any specific needs, since it takes time to process, and will be evaluated case-by-case based on each socio-economic situation.
Important points for all migrants to keep in mind, even if not all-year citizens. It is of special interest for the Ayuntamiento to know how many people spend time here, to organise infrastructure and services. For some items it may also mean higher allocations of regional or state budgets, based on total population registered. It is important to confirm status every five years as a foreign resident (empadronado).
Since last year, we have been meeting in the lovely Mesón Gala, close to the Pulpo and in front of the Puerta del Mar beach in Almuñecar. This is a Sexitano, family-run restaurant, headed by the brothers Luciano (in the restaurant) and Antonio (in the kitchen) with Luciano’s son, Alejandro, in charge of many things, including scheduling events, the sky-bar, and Los Nórdicos contacts.
Wives and other family members are also involved in the business, including Mesón Gala in La Herradura. I asked Luciano if it wasn’t difficult to work with your whole family, dealing with each other all the time. “Work is work, and home is home. We do not mix these issues, and we get along very well”, he answered with a laugh.
They opened Mesón Gala in 2004 at Plaza Damascus and moved to this much bigger location in March 2025. All their regulars followed and a lot of new ones have been attracted by the front-beach view, breathtaking sunsets and the excellent Spanish cuisine.
The competition is getting fierce, with a constant addition of new restaurants and rising prices. Mesón Gala prioritises fresh and high-quality products, mainly from the area, like the quisqillas shrimps from Motril, Mediterranean fresh fish, and the best meat for Luciano’s famous beef tartar. And since Nordics like sauce with their food, this is also something we appreciate at Mesón Gala!
It cost €25 to become a member of Los Nordicos, yearly, 1st October to 30th September. Members get preferential rates at partner organisations and at the Moriscos golf court in Motril. When we organise activities that bring income, we donate to Madres Solas in Almuñecar. We buy yarn for our knitting club, and they donate their lovely products every year to the premature babies’ divisions of Santa Ana Hospital in Mortil or the main hospital of Granada.
We meet for the first time after summer on October 7th at Mesón Gala, at 18 – 19.30h, opening at 17.00h for administration and mingling. We serve cava, and 60s-70s music with Bluemoons – Juanma Alaminos and Ian Arthur. You may stay for dinner at the restaurant.
