A hidden gem in the historic old town of Almuñécar.

I arrived in Almuñécar in April 2026 and found a wonderful old house near the castle to buy. The best decision I made after buying the house was to join Costa Women – Costa Tropical.

I have met many interesting people and taken part in and enjoyed several of the organised activities and events available to members. I would like to share with you all one of the discoveries I made recently.

When planning a trip to Almuñécar’s Castle which is perched high above the town, make sure you don’t miss some of the other interesting, lesser known, attractions that add to the ambiance of the historic old town. The maze of brightly decorated streets, with their pots of flowers hanging from window boxes, balconies and on the street against the houses. In addition to the Castle, you can walk to the museum, just a few streets away.

The new Arts and Cultural Centre on Calle Orovia, is housed in a fully renovated building that dates back to the early 1900’s. As you enter the building you can see in front of you a glass covered well that goes deep into the ground and was the main water supply for the bakery. Moving through into the main room, on your left, is a small dome shaped room, this was the original oven.

The acoustics in this room are strange, giving your voice a deep echo. This building was the first bakery for the entire town at a time when the population was a mere 2,000 people. Directly in front of the main entrance is a small protected inset, to the side of the stairs, in the form of a mini ‘altar’ with a beautiful modern carving of a head and beneath it is a copy of the original book by Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote

The cultural centre had its Grand Inaugural Exhibition of Arte Sur from 10th to 31st July 2026. Throughout the gallery you will find works by local artists and new exhibitions are planned every couple of weeks featuring a different artist. This will be in a part of the gallery that is set aside as a space for new and aspiring artists as well as established artists to show their work.

This is a collaborative project between the Town Hall and Arte Sur Almuñécar. There are plans to renovate the roof terrace as a large space that can offer workshops to school children and adults wanting to explore different aspect of art and artistic techniques such as printing, sculpture etc. Definitely worth a visit!
