A man was arrested after throwing aqua fortis (nitric acid) into the face of a security guard who was on duty at the Granada bus station.

This attack occurred last Sunday, the 23rd and that assailant was a homeless man who often hung around the bus station. It was the security guard’s task, amongst other, to keep him and others from begging in the station, as well as known pickpockets or anybody arousing suspicion.

So, the attacker was no stranger and the guard had often had to tell him to leave, but he always came back and it was probably for reason that he decided to attack the security guard.

On that day, the individual approached him and sprayed his face with this corrosive cleaning agent (aguafuerte). The man had gone to buy it specifically to cause serious injury and had poured some into an empty, plastic soft-drink’s bottle to disguise it, as he later confessed to the police officers.

The security guard was left on his knees, unable to see and with the nitric acide burning his face neck and legs. He colleague rushed him to the bathroom to splash as much water as possible on his face, especially his eyes. He said that he had started vomiting because of the fumes coming off his clothes, which were burning from the acid.

The guard was taken to hospital were he was treated for his skin burns and corneal damage. “My cornea is damaged; my vision is obstructed; it’s like seeing through cobwebs,” he explained, adding, “Doctors say only time will tell if I recover my sight.”

He was also devastated by the fact that his attacker was released on provisional bail with a restraining order. “I know I’m going to cross paths with him again,” he said, even though his attacker has a restraining order.
