A Strange Case

An 86-year-old woman claims that she was approached by two adults and a young teen who allegedly drugged her, leading her to withdraw 3,000 euros from her account and hand the money over to them.

This occurred in Vélez-Málaga around 09.30h on Thursday and the victim, Marta, had been walking along a street near the Mercadona supermarket when they approached her; the woman and the minor stood in front of her whilst the man remained behind her. Then she heard the sound of a spray and the next thing she knew she was sitting happily in a car with them.

They took her to her bank, waited outside whilst she went inside and withdrew 3,000 euros. She came out and handed it over.

They then drove her home…. Much later, around 20.30h, she realised that the jewellery that she had been wearing was missing. This was when she phoned her daughter, who checked her mother’s account and confirmed that 3,000 had been withdrawn – in other words, she hadn’t been imagining what happened in the bank.

Her family then took her to a centro de salud and from there to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía so that they could test her from any drugs in her system. However, the doctors did not follow the specific protocol for chemical submission with scopolamine (truth drug) known colloquially in Spain as burundanga

According to the police statement made by the victim’s family, the hospital only checked for drug abuse, with negative results given that more than eight hours had passed.

The police are investigating and have examined CCTV footage from the bank exterior as well as other CCTV footage in the area where she was supposely intercepted by the three individuals. The daughter is also calling for anybody who might have seen her mother than morning to contact them.
