A Polish tourist in his late 50s died in a swimming pool belonging to a cortijo ear Camino de Corca in Cómpeta, (inland Axarquía).
It was on Sunday morning that the 58-year-old man was found in the water and was pulled out before the emergency services arrived. However, there was nothing that the paramedics could do for the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.
The victim had only arrived on Friday for a a two-week holiday, but which ended tragically just two days later.
The Civil Guard are handling the investigation and obviously, until there is an autopsy report it can only be speculated that he had suffered a heart attack in the pool and lost consciousness.
This summer has seen a seen several deaths connected with water. In fact, by mid-July, there had already been 15 such deaths in the province of Málaga, either on coastal locations; i.e., beaches, or pools – 13 of them had taken place in June.
Furthermore, the Axarquía region has been particularly hard hit, accounting for seven of those drowning cases across towns like Nerja, Torrox, and Vélez-Málaga.
Such has been this flurry of deaths in the water that the Junta launched a campaign in Algarrobo Costa titled, “Don’t wait to see it on the news, in the water carelessness equals an emergency.”
Of course, not all deaths are cases of somebody actually drowning; i.e., drowning being the cause of death, because some deaths are provoked by cardiac problems, meaning that the person died from a heart attack ‘in the water’ but did not drown as he or she was already dead.
Finally, the last water-related death previous to this one happened On Monday morning, involving a 22-year-old man was also found unconscious in the pool of a tourist rental in El Palo, Málaga. The National Police are currently investigating this second incident.
