Where the sea meets the land and when the summer is in full swing, you get very weird beings turning up in the surf; not just the Granadinos, bless their cotton socks.

Beachgoers along the Costa Tropical have been coming across transparent creatures with gelatnous bodies… again, not tourists from colder climes. They look like jellyfish but they’re not… neither are they Mercadona shopping bags – let’s rule out the obvious.

Now, the boffins at the Aula del Mar have said, “Keep calm and carry on,” sort of thing, pointing out that there is no need to be alarmed, even though these creatures, leer at you and make indecent gestures.

They have nothing to do with jellyfish and they are not poisonous, so they are not liable to sting you or make off with your wallet… or wife. *sighs of disappointment from certain readers.*

They are Los Ctenóforos! (screams off stage)

According to the Aula del Mar, they are, “Authentic jewels of marine nature. Theire bodies are practically transparent covered by miniscule cilia that, when moving, generate a very particular iridescence, like small flashes of colours that run through their body while they swim”.

Apparently LSD is not required to experience this.

Anyway, the are quite common along our coast, but like a stealth F-35, it’s difficult to see them. But of course, when the beaches are packed, people notice them and then run around screaming that we are all going to die… or go for lunch at the nearest chiringuito.
