It looks like the Mayor of Almuñécar has given up on the idea of replacing the old Estación Náutica, with its swimming pool, for a block of flats after encountering considerable opposition, so he is going to make it into a youth centre.

Consequently, the Town Council has put the job out to tender with a budget of 176,067.67 euros, IVA included. The task, once commenced, should take four months.

Mayor Juan José Ruiz Joy considers that, it “will allow for a comprehensive renovation of these facilities and provide the town with a modern, accessible, and fully functional space for youth.”

Mayor Ruiz Joya highlighted that this tender represents “a decisive step for the young people of La Herradura to have their own space that is attractive and prepared for studying, carrying out activities, sharing interests, and launching new projects.”

Amongst the planned new spaces, is a study room for students, either in high-school education or those studying for civil-service exam (Oposiciones).

The chosen building company will have to start with the demolition of parts of the old premises and space redistribution; i.e., knocking down a couple of walls and laying couple of new ones. They will also have to replace flooring, adapt the bathrooms to modern requirements and modernise the whole plumbing and electrical installations.

Local architect, Cristina Barbero García, was in charge of drafting the plans, which the Mayor, a village lad himself, considers very positive because it makes uses of local talent.
