At 08.00h on the 12th of this month, somebody phoned in to say a young woman lying on a beach sunbed and was visibly unwell. This occurred on Playa El Faro next to the marina in Marbella.

The young woman was semi-conscious and having serious difficulties breathing, so they called an ambulance and transferred her to the Hospital Costa del Sol.

The officers from the Policia Local who were called out to assist were unable to ID her as she was carrying no personal indentification documents. However, when searching her for this information they did come across an ID card belonging to male foreign resident. The ID card belonged to somebody who has been arrested earlier in the day, but we shall come to that.

At the hospital she underwent emergency surgery, as doctors clearly saw that something was obstructing her airways. Around 10:00h. Doctors found that she had a gold necklace lodged in her throat after attempting to swallow it.

However, as she was lying unconscious in the Recovery Ward, they couldn’t question her but they did place her under guard suspecting her of having taken part in a mugging earlier in the morning.

Around 05.00h that morning, or in other words, about three hours earlier to the woman being found on a sunbed, the Policía Local had been called out because of a mugging in a narrow alley behind the Puerto Deportivo de Marbella.

The victim had been approached by two men and a young woman. They yanked the gold necklace from his neck and then ran off. CCTV coverage in the area recorded two men fleeing the scene of the mugging.

Armed with a description thanks to the CCTV footage, they soon tracked down two men who matched the video images perfectly, so they were arrested. The victim also recognised the two men as the ones who had attacked him.

Both men were Moroccans in their 20s. but they didn’t have the chain on them, nor was there any sign of the woman accomplice… until somebody found her choking on a sunbed. Oh, and the ID card she had on her belonged to one of her accomplices.
