The XVIII Festival de Teatro Grecolatino de Almuñécar Sexi Firmum Iulium well be held from the 2nd to the 6th of September in the Parque Majuelo.

The festival will comprise five plays that combine major productions from the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida with a brand-new addition: the participation of local, theatre companies.
Mérida in Extremadura has one of the best Roman amphitheatres in the country and has long staged classical works in play form there.
Councilor for Culture, Alberto García Gilabert, announced the coming event together with the festival’s artistic director and coordinator, Antonio Cantudo.
The event poster features the image of a Roman warrior inspired by an archaeological artifact kept in Almuñécar’s Cueva de Siete Palacios Archaeological Museum, serving as a nod to the municipality’s Roman history.
The councillor said that the Greco-Roman, theatre festival is right up there with Jazz en La Costa as a leading summer cultural feature.
The festival opens with with the local Almuñécar companies Elenco Teatro and Segundo Acto Teatro. They will stage Euripides’ Medea on the 2nd and Aristophanes Greek comedy, The Thesmophoriazusae the following evening.
Then comes the works staged by the Mérida International Festival, including Jason and the Furies on the 4th and by Teatro del Noctámbulo, starring José Vicente Moirón and Carmen Mayordomo, two performers of renowned national prestige.
On the 5th, Phaedra in Hell will arrive, starring actress Lidia Bosch alongside Julio Peña and Alejandro Albarracín. This production will premiere in Mérida in mid-August and will arrive in Almuñécar just a few weeks after its debut.
The festival will close on the 6th with Antigone, the Cursed Lineage; the new production by Ricardo Iniesta for Atalaya Teatro. This is another production premiering this year at the Mérida festival.
Tickets and Passes
Season passes for all five performances are already on sale for 40 euros, including fees. Individual tickets will go on sale once the priority period for pass holders ends.
Tickets for the professional performances will cost 15 euros, while the shows by local companies will cost 5 euros.
Tickets and passes can be purchased through the bravoentradas.es website, as well as at the Almuñécar Casa de la Cultura and at Viajes Azul Marino.
