This year’s regulation for governing access to Playa Cantarriján in La Herradura came into force last month, with little change, if any, to previous years.

Provincial Delegate, Antonio Granados pointed out that, “The regulation governing access to Cantarriján constitutes an example of sustainable management that allows the conservation of the natural environment to be compatible with the enjoyment of the public, while guaranteeing the safety of visitors and the preservation of a protected space of enormous ecological value.”

Thank you, Mr Granados from Granada, but we knew that. 

Having got that off his chest he went on to mention the figures for last summer, which showed that between June and September, 33,952 people used the shuttle service, which was equivalent to preventing 11,317 private vehicles venturing down, based on an average of three people per vehicle.

He added that, “Playa Cantarriján has only one access and exit road. In the event of an emergency, especially a forest fire during the summer months, the presence of hundreds of private vehicles parked next to the beach could cause the collapse of that single evacuation route, hindering both the orderly exit of users and the entry of emergency services.”

As for this year, there are two parking areas for users, offering between them 180 parking spaces: 75 in the main one and 82 in the secondary one, plus 16 spaces for motorcycles, two spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility, and five specific spaces for bicycles.

As for the shuttle service, it will run daily from 09.00h to 21.00h with around ten to 15 minutes between runs. From Monday to Friday, two shuttle buses with 22 seats each will operate, while on weekends and holidays, a third vehicle with 20 seats will be added to meet the increased demand. During the month of August, considered the period of maximum influx, the service will have three operational buses every day of the week.

The round-trip ticket price remains at three euros, and season passes can be purchased; i.e., a weekly pass for 15.75 euros and a ten-day pass for 22.50 euros.

Thanks to a lease from the Junta, the bus company ROALFA has a ten-year contract, meaning that from now to 2032 it will carrying out the task.
