The municipality of Pinos Puente has a new container for its ‘waste,’ so that locals can put their marihuana-plant cuttings in them…
The fact is that uncontrolled dumping of marijuana waste proliferating in the town has led the Town Council to install containers in a desperate bid to minimise this problem.
Mayor Iván Fernández explained that this dumping of marihuana-plant, left-overs costs the municipality 100,000 euros to clear it up last year. So, in response the Town Council has provided four containers along the path leading to the Madre Elvira and the cave areas of town; i.e., rural areas , where the stuff is being dumped.
But it’s not just the plants themselves, but everything connected with their cultivation: rubbish bags, fertiliser containers, remnants of pipes and plastics and flowerpots are dump onto the side of this track.
What worried the Mayor was that marihuana growers from neighbouring towns and villages would start dumping their waste in the municipality as well, so providing containers, he believes, will keep the place tidier.
Yet the habitual fly-tipping spots are not only along the said lane, as Río Cubillas, which runs through the middle of the municipality, is often a ‘choice’ dumping ground. The Mayor says that they are waiting permission from the relevant authority to access the riverbed and clear it out.
Fortunately for the Town Council, a volunteer hiking association is in charge of carrying out manual cleanups of the environment.
Finally, Pinos Puente had a large fire in the summer of 2024, owing to somebody burning their marijuana waste (stalks and roots) which got out of hand and ended up wiping out 280 hectares.
