A pharmacist pointed out on her social-media account the dangers of certain beverages that are more toxic to the liver than soft drinks or wine & beer.
According to this pharmacist, every time you consume hard spirits like vodka, gin, or whiskey, the liver enters a state of metabolic ’emergency.’ She could have added, so does your wallet but let’s not digress.

The problem is the production of acetaldehyde as your body breaks down these alcoholic drink into ethanol. This byproduct is highly toxic on fatty liver cells as it causes severe inflammation and, more critically, blocks the organ’s natural ability to regenerate.
Acetaldehyde is not only the main cause of hangover symptoms and facial flushing, but it also acts as an aggressive metabolite that immediately overloads liver function.
It was also pointed out that many people believe that it is only when drink a lot of the stuff constantly that it will cause a problem. This is not the case. Two daily doses of one of these liquors are enough to overload the system, regardless of whether consumption is concentrated solely on weekends.
“Your liver doesn’t distinguish between holidays,” the expert reminds us, noting that the frequency and intensity of alcohol consumption are determining factors in the development of chronic diseases. The liver suffers a progressive loss of cells in response to this type of chemical aggression.”
So, there you have it! It doesn’t matter than you only enjoy your gin-tonics during the weekend because once you have two glasses and lay off the drink during the week. A little accumulative damage builds up on those “just a tipple” Saturday’s and Sundays, or whether you’re knocking them back whilst you’re on holiday, because your liver will not be a happy bunny! Cut back on the glue sniffing, too!
