Jet-Ski to The Rescue

Most of the rescues that we cover in the Gazette involve hikers and mountain climbers, but this time it involves rescues at sea.

On the 29th of last month, the National Police received a direct call on their 091 number to say that a woman was in trouble about 350 metres out.

This took place at 16.30h, and neither the Red Cross nor the Guardia Civil had the resources available to carry out a rescue, so 112 sent out the Salvamento Marítimo launch, Tarifa. However, this would take time and time was what the woman was short of.

So, police offers got hold of 42-year-old, Zeus Leiva Peña, who runs Puerta Rey dry dock, who has a jet ski. He had to get it off a trailer to launch it but lost no time getting it into the water. He reached her and pulled her onto the jet ski – she was too exhausted to swim and had begun to go under. She was palid and her lips had turned blue; i.e., clear signs of hypothermia.

An ambulance was also standing by and they treated her on the spot and between them all; the officers, Zeus and the paramedics, they saved her life.

This is the second time that the police have turned to Zeus to help with a rescue: on the 29th of March a 12-year-old was found drifting on a paddleboard about 500 metres out, having been pushed out to sea by the current and strong northern winds. Zeus and his jet ski were called upon to fish him out.
