Yesterday afternoon the residents of the area of La Carrera in Almuñécar were surprised to see a dozen Guardia Civil officers turn up - they were after the suspect behind a mugging.

The 68-year-old woman, Carmen, was mugged on the 7th of April with the assailant hitting her several times on the head in order to get her to let go of her handbag.

The Judicial Department at the Guardia Civil post in Almuñécar took charge of an investigation ending in yesterday’s arrest and the search of his home.

The suspect has a criminal record involving cases of aggression and threatening behaviour.

When the man was brought out in handcuffs, many residents of the blocks of flats there threw insults and spat at him. It was necessary for the officers to protect him from the ire of Carmen’s neighbours, family and friends.
