Almuñécar's Councillor for the Environment, Lucía González, announced the launch of a mosquito surveillance & control programme in several places around the municipality.
This is a result of the heavy rains in recent weeks, which will encourage mosquitoes to breed like lunatics.

The Environmental Department has hired Sanisur, which is responsible for carrying out the Mosquito Surveillance and Control Programme linked to West Nile Fever (WNF).
Councillor González explained, “This is a preventive programme that allows us to act in advance at points to where there may be a risk of proliferation.” The operation includes biological and chemical control at high-risk sites.
The programme actually began in February 2026 but will remain active until the end of the summer period, intensifying especially during the months that these 6-legged vampires are prevalent.
The Councillor added, “This is not a one-off action, but a task we have been developing for over a year in coordination with health authorities… …regarding the West Nile virus.”
Her department has set up a telephone (958 639 960) so that people can report potential areas of stagnant water or request information about the programme.
