Well, the Mayor of Almuñécar chose a politically savvy day for the inauguration of the new municipal market; El Día de Andalucía.
We say savvy, because the Andalusian regional elections are not far away but thanks to a law that prohibits inauguration of public building, etc next to an election date, he couldn’t really get the inauguration much closer and not break the law.

Anyway, the market took six years and cost 7m euros to build, funded entirely through the municipal budget.
The turn out from locals to witnessing the occasion was multitudinous with hundreds of people milling around outside unable to get inside because it was already packed.
So what does it have inside? Forty individual stalls, each about 12 sq/m, equipped with refrigerated displays and cold storage. There are also staff changing rooms and a bar area. Beneath there is space for 200 plus vehicles.
Both the Mayor and the Councilor for Urban Planning, Javier García, took a moment to apologise for the delays caused by post-pandemic cost increases and technical hurdles. They framed the long wait as a necessary sacrifice to achieve “dignity for decades” rather than a quick, temporary fix.
Well, it’s been inaugurated but it won’t be functioning until the 10th of March when the stalls begin to trade and will be open from Monday to Saturday, 08:00h to 15:00h. The bars, however, can stay open in the evening and open on Sundays, too.
