Motril Breakwater Not Working

The Mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, admitted in Madrid that the breakwater on Playa Granada isn’t working as it should.

For this reason, she has requested an urgent meeting with the provincial Head of Costas, Ana María Oñoro. She wants the Provincial, Central-Government representative to announce measures that must be adopted following the recent storms that have battered the Motril coastline.

The Mayor stated, “This Town Council has been making a very significant effort to develop our beaches as an economic and tourism engine for the city in recent years.”

Mayor Chamorro reported the breakwater on Punta del Santo on Playa Granada is something that Motril has been after for 10 years, but which “currently was not working as hoped.” She made it clear that  that the  responsibility to fix it “belongs to the Central Government and requires an immediate response for the good of our residents.”

She went on to say, “We also seek a set of short-term measures to repair the damage caused by these recent impactful storms in Motril, where several municipal beach infrastructures were damaged,” adding that Semana Santa (the start of the tourism season) was just around the corner and that the beaches have to be ready for it.

In the meantime, the Chairman of the Provincial Council, Francis Rodríguez, announced an emergency fund allocation for Motril of nearly 75,000 euros for repairs and the replacement of all infrastructure damaged by the storms.”
