Frenchwoman Injured on Sierra Nevada

A young French woman was badly injured after falling in Sierra Nevada against the wall of a building, damaging her face.

The accident occurred near Pradollano when the woman and her male companion were crossing snow wearing snowshoes (raquetas). She lost her balance, slipped down a snow-covered embankment and hit her face against the wall.

The 20-year-old woman was rescued by a Granada Fire Department detachment which is based in the skiing resort. A helicopter was called out to medivac her to the Hospital de Neurotraumatología in the city of Granada.

The impact broke her jaw, injured one of her eyes as well as causing other facial injuries.

The helicopter was needed because of the accumulated snow left by a series of cold fronts. Fire personnel had to reach her by going into the building to extract her via a downstairs window rather than trying to stretcher up the snow & ice covered embankment.
