La Vuelta Ciclista de España

Many readers know that I (Martin) am not a huge fan of cyclists on the nation’s roads, yet the news that the 2026 Vuelta Ciclista de España will come through Almuñécar is good news for the town.

Yes, on the 4th of September the 13th stage of the Vuelta Ciclista de España will start off from Almuñécar and peddle its way through the province ending in Loja 193 kilometres away.

The presentation of the route for this cycle-endurance, sports event took place in Monaco; the Mayor of Almuñécar, Juan José Ruiz Joya, was present… naturally, as part of the province’s entourage, which included the Chairman of the Provincial Council, the Chairman of the Mancomunidad, Rafael Caballero and the Mayor of Loja, Joaquín Camacho Borrego.

The Mayor of Almuñécar pointed out the importance of Almuñécar being chosen as the starting point for the 13th stage of the race, saying that it would not only be the presence of the cyclists themselves and their support teams but that the event would be seen internationally, bringing images to the homes of thousands of cycling enthusiasts around the world.

All that, he pointed out, means a boost for the local economy.

It also should not be forgotten that one of the competitors, Carlos Rodríguez, is none other than an Almuñequero, whose very presence in these European competitions brings the name of Almuñécar with him.

Lastly, the Mayor said that starting now his administration would work continually in conjunction with the organisation behind La Vuelta and other administrations as well so that, “The Almuñécar departure point for this historic event meets the high standard that the sporting occasion requires.”
