Road Traffic This Christmas

From today at 15.00h until midnight on Tuesday, January the 6th, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) will be out in force to keep an eye on the increased traffic during the Christmas period.

Over Christmas the DGT calculates that there will be around 569,000 trips by road in the province of Granada, divided into three time periods that coincide with the main festivities:

  • 1st Phase: Christmas: From Friday, December 19 to Thursday the 25th.
  • 2nd Phase: Last week of year: from Friday the 26th to Thursday the 1st of, January .
  • 3rd Phase: Three Kings: from Friday the 2nd to Tuesday the 6th, 2026.

Many of the trips, both long and short distances, especially during weekends and holidays, will have destinations such as second homes, mountain areas for winter sports, places of winter tourist attractions, as well as large, shopping centres.

To cover all these movements, the DGT will be out helping those in difficulty and fining those that deserve it until their eyes bleed, sort of thing, all in the name of road safety.

To this end, the DGT will have every available traffic officer out in patrol cars or on motorcycle, together with helicopter patrols, as well as the full manning of the Traffic Management Centres.

A) Facilitate the mobility and fluidity of traffic, they will be setting up extra lanes where there will be heavy traffic; i.e., in the A-44 between Dúrcal and Padul, for example, using cones and diversion roadsigns.

B) All roadwork will cease during this period and HGVs (Heavy Goods Vehicles) will be limited.

C) Maintain proper Road-Safety conditions for all types of vehicles on roads with sections or areas affected by adverse weather conditions such as snow, ice, fog, rain and wind.

As for road conditions on any particular day, you can visit the DGT website with up-to-the-minute news or by calling 011.
