Sports enthusiasts in Motril are in luck. Following the inauguration a few months ago of the Playa Poniente coastal path, new sports courts have now sprung up.
Where there was once that wide area of river silt cleverly disguised as beach sand, now stands the sports area covering 36,000 sq/m where you could land a small aircraft… or a whole witches coven with STOL (short take-off & landing) capacity to enjoy a ‘spell on the beach.’
Anyway… The Councillor for Beaches, José Peña, explained that Playa Poniente will have three separate beach volleyball courts and one beach, football pitch. Each area will be clearly marked so that the different sports can be practiced without any interference.
A special, yellowish, fine, and compact sand, like that used on competition fields, will be used, allowing for better playing conditions and, in the future, the hosting of tournaments and sporting events, Councillor Peña explained.
“The courts will be protected by nets and posts to prevent balls from going out-of-bounds, ensuring safety and harmonious coexistence with other beachgoers,” he added. Harmonious coexistence? Sounds a bit ooommmmm, doesn’t it?
But it doesn’t stop there because next to the courts, a new children’s play area has also been set up, designed especially for the younger children; i.e. brats. Seesaws and a rope-climbing area will allow children to play, climb, and plunge to the ground and burst into screaming fits, but harmoniously.
What more? New bathroom facilities have already been installed at various points along the coastline. Some of these structures can already be seen in this area of the beach, while others will be located next to the Chiringuito Alonso and on Playa del Cable, where the knocking shop was – of course, your husbands, Ladies, were unaware of this dubious presence.
Unwilling, perhaps, to let the Councillor steal all the limelight, Mayor Luisa García Chamorro announced, “We are building Motril’s second green space, with sports facilities, new restaurants and bars, and green areas that, in addition to beautifying our surroundings, will protect our natural habitats. This is a moment of unprecedented expansion for our town.”
So there you have it, the present governing party in Motril has been vying with the Almighty in the creation department, but more moderately expressed by their press releases.
