Another Hiker Rescued

Well, it looks like we were right to suppose that this weekend would see more hikers needing to be rescued by the Guardia Civil.

A 54-year-old hiker was injured after falling in the Sierra Nevada within the municipality of Güéjar Sierra on Saturday.

The emergency coordination centre, 112, received a distress call a little before 14.00h, requesting urgent medical assistance for a hiking companion who had fallen down a slope approximately 100 meters deep

The caller explained that the victim was more or less below where the Monument to Susana is; about four kilometres from Hoya de la Mora.

So they alerted the Guardia Civil who sent out its Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) and informed 061 Emergency Medical Centre to stand by.

The Guardia Civil helicopter flew the rescue team to the scene. The team managed to retrieve the victim from where he lay and get him back to the helicopter and from there, flew the victim to the 112 helipad, where the medical team was waiting to transfer him to the Virgen de las Nieves Neurotrauma and Rehabilitation Hospital.

There are no details given as to the age, nationality nor indeed the extent of the injuries suffered.

With Sunday not over at the time of writing, we shall see if there were any more incidents reported over the weekend.

Note: the accompanying photo is of the rock where the monument to Susana stands, which you can see in the upper, left-hand corner. There doesn’t appear to be much information about who the skier Susana was, when or how she died, or whether indeed she had died in an accident near this spot.
