Preparing Roads for Winter

The Junta de Andalucía has more than five hundred personnel, 148 vehicles and 6,200 tonnes of salt to deal with winter snowfall and frost on the roads in the province of Granada.

Minister Rocío Díaz carried out a press call at the Santa Fe, road-maintenance centre to speak about the Junta’s Winter Road Plan, which is already underway and will continue until spring in the five Andalusian provinces with a real risk of snow (Almería, Córdoba, Granada, Jaén and Málaga).

For example, Granada (Sierra Nevada) and Jaén (Úbeda), there are more kilometres of roads at risk of snowfall.

She called upon drivers to be responsible and avoid unnecessary road trips during adverse weather events such as these latest gales.

She explained that this year the Winter Road Plan has a larger budget and an improved service. Of the 148 vehicles, there are 42 snowploughs, 18 backhoe loaders, 75 vehicles, some of which are 4x4s, seven lorries and five tractors. All this to serve 2,077 kilometers of roads at risk of snowfall and frost.

There are 66kms with a high risk of snowfall because they exceed the level of 1,500 meters, such as the mountain passes of La Mora and La Ragua and access to Sierra Nevada.

The Winter Road Plan is based on three aspects: the up-to-date monitoring of meteorological information, through the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), deploying snowploughs and laying salt, and, finally, providing up-to-date information to road users.

Regarding this last point, the Junta has a citizen-information, telephone number, 012, which, amongst other services, offers information on the actual state of roads at any given moment. This telephone number is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
