Almuñécar Aquarium News

Almuñécar Town Council announced that the Aquario will be reopened this month, after having been closed several years.

Councillor Carlos Ferrón, who heads the Agricultural Department, made the announcement stating that it had been one of the most difficult projects in recent years owing to the structural deficiencies in the installations.

“When we took over we found the Aquario in a very complicated situation with constructural problems that had worsened with time. We have had to work on practically all of the installations, from the fish tanks to the aircon/climate system,” said Councillor Ferrón.

The Aquario, which is situated under Plaza Kuwait, had been one of the towns main tourist attractions with over 3,000 sq/m dedicated to Mediterranean fauna. However, with water leaks, and deficiencies in the oxygenation system, the decision was taken to close it down in 2021.

“We found soft iron which should never have been used in areas with salt water,” he pointed out.

All this work to restore the installations to working order so that it can be reopened cost over a quarter of a million euros, supplied from the municipal coffers and a payout from the insurance when the huge, cylindrical fish tank broke some years back.

Despite being closed to the public these past years, the sea creatures within have been maintained; the aquarium has some 300 different species, such as sharks, rays, starfish, sea cucumbers and other types of Mediterranean sealife.

“We have always kept the bull sharks and other emblematic creatures there but now, with new fish tanks and better conditions, we want to create a greater zoological variety to attract both residents and tourists,” assured Councillor Ferrón.
