No Train for Motril

It was in 2019 when Motril Port commissioned a study on the viability of a train connection from Granada and Motril, which breathed hope back into this long-standing wish.

All public entities and a multitude of private ones backed the project because Motril is the only commercial port in Andalucía without a train connection, which continues to hamper its growth.

However, the project has just received yet another blow, this time from the European Commission which made no mention of a Motril branch line within its Mediterranean Corridor Rail Network plan.

Why? Because the Spanish Central didn’t submit a constructive report backing it.

This omission has caused tremendous irritation within the province. The Chairman of the Autoridad Portuaria de Motril, García Fuentes, warned of the economic drag that this situation continues to produce on the port and Costa Tropical in general.

Chairman García admits that such a rail link would be expensive and would take time to build but even so believes further excuses for postponing the project are simply no longer valid.

“It’s another opportunity lost; something that unfortunately we are growing accustomed to, owing to the lack of push to provide the province with infrastructure,” he said.

He added that traffic load is outgrowing on the A-44, with tailbacks and problems each summer and weekend, therefore this alternative form of transport would relieve the pressure on the autovía and lessen the carbon footprint of fossil fuels.

Obviously, a rail link direct to the port is fundamental and the lack of one seriously limits the capacity and competitivity of Motril Port.
