The Public Prosecutor for the Province of Cáceres (Extremadura) has recommended 5-years' imprisonment for a farmer who made his workers live with his pigs.
The farmer allegedly, not only made the farmhands cohabit with his herd of pigs, but gave them no other option than so sleep on the ground, without running water or heating — other than the heat given off by the pigs, that is. Their only source of water was the same taps from which the animals received their water.

They were not given rest periods during their day’s work, had no official hiring contract and were obliged to clear up the pig excrement with their bare hands.
According to the Prosecutor’s provisional conclusions, the accused was the administrator of a pig farm during September and October 2023. After his Spanish worker quit, he hired two Moroccan immigrants who were in Spain illegally to look after the livestock at least during the month of October. He promised them a monthly salary of 700 euros each and free accommodation.
Bear in mind that the minimum wage for this kind of work is 1,080 euros… Also bear in mind that these guys were Muslims and they were expected not only to work and live with around 1,000 pigs, but also clean up there crap with their bare hands, which probably didn’t get them any Smarty Points as far as the Koran goes.
These promises turned out to be fairytales and they began work without an official contract or Social-Security coverage. One of them, after having worked for a month, only received 250 euros whilst his companion… only 150 euros after working seven days a week.
As there was no kitchen, they used the pigs trough as a stove by putting firewood under it.
Well, the inevitable happened under those conditions and one of the workers had an accident receiving burns and well receiving a blow from an iron bar, causing injuries to his face, hand and foot.
In short, the pig farmer (some might consider that the farmer was a pig) took advantage of the precarious position of the two men, who needed to work to send money back to their families.
Apart from the recommended prison sentence, the Public Prosecutor also recommends a fine of 5,400 euros and that he should be barred from managing livestock farms for a period of 21 months. Oh, and he should also have to pay 178, euros in compensation to the injured immigrant
