Government Does U-Turn

The Minister for Social Security, Elma Saiz, did a handbrake turn on her previous announcement on raising monthly, Social Security quotas for Autónomos.

A wave of criticism from employers, unions, and parliamentary groups, ‘convinced’ the Minister to completely reverse her previous decision.

So radical has this U-turn been, that the increase in contributions for the highest earners is now lower than what was proposed for those with the lowest incomes.

The Ministry presented the new proposal yesterday in which the Government proposes freezing contributions for one-third of the self-employed, those with the lowest incomes, and raising by between €2.50 and €14.75 per month for the rest of autónomos.

More specifically, the new document includes a freeze on the first three contribution brackets, at the lowest end of the table, so that all self-employed workers earning less than €1,166.70 per month will suffer no increase Social Security next year.

This measure will benefit a third of the group, since this reduced bracket represents around 36% of all entrepreneurs—more than 1.3 million—according to 2023 data provided by the Ministry after the regularisation process.

You can read about the original proposal, which was proportionally greater for the lower end, by following this link.

Having established this freeze for more than 1.3 million workers, the remaining group, around 2.2 million, those earning more than €1,166 per month, will only see their contributions increased by between 1% and 2.5%—less, therefore, than inflation, and less than what Asociaciones de Trabajadores Autónomos even demanded.
