Soldier Dies out Hiking

You hear cases of people going out on hikes, either not prepared physically or not properly equipped, but when a soldier from the Spanish Legion dies on a hiking route, you know that this wasn't the case.

The 23-year-old soldier from Chiclana de la Frontera but based in the legionary base in Ronda, died whilst out trekking in the Sierra de Cádiz near Ubrique this Monday. The Spanish Legion is an elite military unit renowned for physical fitness.

According to the Guardia Civil, they received a call to say that he had gone missing, having failed to report for duty or stay the night in his family home.

Knowing what route he had taken, the Guardia Civil mountain-rescue unit (Greim) was mobilised. There is a team based in that area but were supported by a helicopter from Granada.

They found his body in the area known as the Pico de la Silla and from there his body was taken for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. There is no information whether he had injuries associated with a fall.
