This barrio of Almuñécar has its fiestas coming up this weekend with a variety of planned activities, including a race in benefit of AECC.
As is the custom with these fiestas are in honour of La Virgen Madre, and besides the race in order to raise funds for the cancer association, there will also be a Ruta a Caballo and the Procesión de la Virgen Madre.

As a quick aside, if you put the AECC through the Google Translator, it comes up with AECC (Association of Catholics of Catalonia) instead of the Asociation Española Contra El Cancer – don’t trust it!
Back to the fiestas, which will be held between the 10th and the 13th. The Councilor for Fiestas, Alberto García Gilabert, along with representatives of the Hermandad de La Virgen Madre, San Isidro Labrador and the Asociación de Vecinos El Acueducto de Torrecuevas, announced the official agenda for this 53rd edition.
The official opening will take place on Friday the 10th at midday (noon) with the inauguration of the fiesta tent or marque, where you will be able to enjoy a free plate of puchero de coles, so be prepared to keep your windows open when you get home… to be on the safe side.
There will also be a painting competition entitled Pinta tu Acueducto and an exhibition of subtropical fruit grown in the valley. The cancer association will also get another helping hand (economically) with buñuelos, deep fried by the local ladies and the proceeds for which goes to the AECC, as mentioned. There will also be a flamenco show given by the Escuela Paola Almodóvar.
Saturday will see plenty of horse riding, put on by the Asociación Caballista Costa Tropical and the Centro Ecuestre Piedras Blancas, as well as the tradicional Carrera de Cintas a Caballo (horseback ribbon race).
During the morning there will also be a Carrera de Colores where runners get covered in different paint colours, but in power form. This is followed by a foam party and a popular meal of migas. The day will wind up with live music and evening entertainment by DJ Rodao.
October the 12th is a big day all over Spain but in Torrecuevas its the Día de la Virgen Madre with a relgious ceremony (church Mass) at 17.30h in Almuñécar’s main church with the procession making its way up to Torrecuevas by road and riverbed (better hope that it doesn’t rain).
Sunday will also see the fund-raising race for the AECC and the XV Campeonato de Fútbol Infantil. The day will end with a firework display and the election of the Chirimoya King & Queen.
Finally, on Monday, the festivities will close on a gastronomic note, including a giant paella, chirmoya tasting and a cooking competition (bake off?) and the traditional chinchón and paulo competition (Spanish card games involving a Spanish pack).
