Long Loads Roll

It's hard to get an idea of just how big those propeller blades are on the windturbine generators until you pass one on the road being haulled by a panting lorry, with the driver screaming, "let me out."

The Danish company Vestas make them at their factory in Daimiel near Ciudad Real. With the A-44 bridge out of action, these loads were temporarily stopped but now they are on the move again, making their way down to Motril Port for storage before export far and wide.

From early yesterday morning, three lorries labouring with their 80-metre load, set off from the factory arriving at the detour off the A-44 onto the old N-323 around about 15.10h. Ideal reporter,
MJ Arrebola, accompanied by graphic reporter, Javier Martin, were there to cover the story and we have based this article on theirs and used frames from their video.

Escorted by Guardia Civil units, both bikes and patrol cars, they made sure that nobody was going to argue over who had right of way… as if anybody would!

Getting these huge pieces around some of the corners and junctions was obviously fun for the lorry drivers, whose cabs were no doubt littered with newly laid eggs. One of the ‘tests’ for the drivers’ skill was the roundabout with gasolinera/turn off for Lobres where they swung right around it to get back onto the autovía (A-7).

Upon arrival in Motril, the sirens on the escorting Guardia Civil vehicles announced their imminent arrival and the Port Police waited anxiously with butterfly nets… OK, just joking. The convoy arrived around 16.00h

According to the Chairman of the Autoridad Portuaria de Motril, José García Fuentes, last year the port handled 1,500 blades and that despite the problem with Rules bridge, it is hoped that this year it will be around that figure again.
