Elderly Man Rescued

An 89-year-old gent was rescued off Playa La Charca in Salobreña after being swept out to sea.

This occurred one Saturday around the middle of last month. The Guardia Civil post in Salobreña received a call around 06.30h from a group of anglers who had heard pleas for help coming from out at sea.

A patrol went to the beach and spotted the victim some 300 metres off shore. Given the seriousness of the situation, the Central Operativa de Servicios (COS) alerted the Servicio Marítimo Provincial.

In the meantime, one of the officers on the beach decided to strip off down to his undies and borrowing a paddle board from a nearby beach establishment and struck out towards the struggling man.

Upon reaching the exhausted man, the officer managed to keep him afloat with his head out of the water until the Servicio-Marítimo launch arrived. They were both picked up and brought to shore.

According to the Guardia Civil, the victim is a resident of Salobreña and had suffered no physical injuries although he was exhausted by his ordeal.
