Mugging at A Service Station

Travelling can have its dangers and parking in service station areas are not always a safe haven, as the following incident demonstrates.

Granada-based Guardia Civil officers arrested three individuals aged between 27 and 36, accused of mugging a couple as they sat parked up in a service station in Cijuela in the Santa Fé area of the province.

The incident took place on the 15th of this month when suddenly two individuals approached the parked car and started a struggle to wrench a handbag from one of the occupants.

Having achieved possession of the handbag, containing money, IDs and bankcards, etc, they ran off over to another parked car where the third member of the gang was waiting. This car had foreign number plates and had the steering wheel on the right; i.e., most probably a British or Irish car.

A nearby patrol car received instructions to investigate from the police HQ after a call from the victims. Once there, they got a statements and a description of the attackers and their car, which they radioed into the command centre. Several other mobile units were directed to the area to search for the car.

It was a patrol vehicle belonging to Tráfico that located the car on the A-92 where it passes through the municipality of Salar. They pulled the car over and Identified the occupants and searched the vehicle, finding the stolen handbag with its contents. They immediately arrested the men.

The Guardia Civil press release does not mention the nationality of the suspects or that of the victims but just goes on to say that the arrested men are being held in police custody to await appearing before a police court.
