Well then, we've got some good news for you because on Saturday the 2nd the Alpujarra village of Bércules will be celebrating New Year's Eve! Yes, you read that correctly.
There will be Christmas carols, the 12 strikes of midnight accompanied by scoffing grapes and of course, a knees up with a live pachanga band, as well as all that you would expect on the night of the 31st of December… but on the 2nd of August.

That’s because on New Year’s Eve, 1993, there was a power cut just when the revellers were poised to gobble down their horrified grapes, leaving the locals with a bad taste in their mouths, metaphorically speaking, of course.
Not to be done out of their New Year’s Eve celebration, they decided, sod it, let’s do it on the 2nd of August, 1994 and that is how the tradition began.
The fiesta starts today on Friday the first with kiddies’ activities and traditional music with those very Spanish musical instruments, the zambomba and empty anise bottles (the equivalent of a skiffle board). On the second, there will be parades, tonnes of anise and Christmas mantecados donated by La Estepeña, visits to the New Year’s Eve Museum and even Nativity displays along the streets.
Of course, no Christmas in Spain is complete without the Three Kings Parade, which will start out from the municipal dependency of Alcútar
Anyway, this is the only place in the whole of Spain, probably in the whole of the world, where they will be celebrating New Year’s Eve on the 2nd of August, so why miss it?
