Busy Weekend for Rescues

The Civil Guard, mountain-rescue teams were called out five times over the weekend within the province.

In the first of these, which took place on Friday the 25th, a 65-year-old woman was rescued after suffering a knee injury that prevented her from continuing the hiking route she was on with other companions in the Vereda de La Laguna area in the municipality of Lanjarón. She was picked up by helicopter and flown to the General Hospital in Granada (PTS).

The next day, they were called out twice, with the first being along Dúrcal River, in the Barranco de los Bolos, where a 49-year-old woman had hurt her knee and needed to be winched up to the helicopter. So narrow was the gorge that they needed 30 metres of cable to reach her.

Shortly after, they had to carry out yet another rescue in the Junta de Los Ríos in Otívar, where they after often called out to.

A man after jumping down one of the cascades injured his heel. The pain in both this heel and ankle left him unable to walk. The rescue team went in on foot, brought him back to his parked car at the entrance to the gorge, so that his companions could drive him to the nearest Centro de Salud for treatment (Almuñécar).

Then came Sunday with the first call out which meant that they had to return to the Barranco de Los Bolos del Río Dúrcal. A 44-year-old woman had suffered a fall, resulting in an ankle injury. After immobilising her leg at the accident site, she was air lifted by helicopter and taken to the PTS hospital.

Lastly, a 37-year-old man, who was hiking along a trail running alongside Río Cacín in the municipality of Arenas del Rey, had taken a fall and suffered several injuries. As this happened in a steep, wooded area, the team had two cut through the undergrowth to reach him and bring him out by stretcher. The waiting helicopter flew him to Hospital de Traumatología.
