The Value of Válor

Do you dread your water bill? Well, you wouldn't in Válor, deep in the Alpujarra Granadina, where each household only pays six euros... a year!

Yes, your eyes weren’t deceiving you, the locals pay a whopping six euros a year (plus IVA) because none of the houses have water meters, something the Mayor says will have to change.

Mayor Juan Antonio Sánchez Montoro (PP) explained that vehicle owners pay less that 40 euros a year and rubbish collection & sewage disposal a crippling 77 euros… a year.

The Mayor said, “I’m of the opinion that residents should have water meters installed and to raise taxes a little,” adding, “The way I see it, people cannot continue to pay just 83 euros a years for mains water, rubbish collection and sewage disposal.”

He explained that the problem is that the company that has the contract for collection of rubbish, Hermacasi, charges the Town Hall just over 3,000 euros and then raised it to almost 5,000 euros, which is an expense that the village couldn’t take on.

So the Town Council decided to hire a local man to collect the rubbish and it works out a lot less to provide rubbish collection for the 660 inhabitants of Válor and its municipal dependencies.

So, they want all buildings to have a water meter and they want to raise local taxes a little. The Mayor also wants the Junta and the Provincial Council to lend a helping hand; a grant for infrastructure that needs repair, like the Puente de La Tableta. There’s also a very dangerous bend on the road to Ugíjar where there have been several accidents. To avoid more, the road needs widening.

The list of things that need sorting out continues but we think that you have got the picture.
