A towering column of smoke not far from the A-7 where it passes through Vélez-Málaga had many drivers gawking (not recommended) and wondering what was causing it.
The answer is that it was a delivery lorry next to a McDonald’s fast-food restaurant that caught fire, spewing smoke that was clearly visible for miles.

The fire began around 15.00h in the lorry, which quickly spread to a nearby area of brush and cultivated land, rapidy engulfing a large palm tree.
As it affected land rather than an urban area, Infoca were called in to put it out; they had contained it by 17.05h and announced that it was under control by 18.30h.
They had used one helicopter and a single-engine aircraft to water bomb it, one large fire truck and were backed by personnel from the Nerja and Rincón de la Victoria, fire services
Note: Infoca uses the terms Estabilizado (it’s not advancing nor new fronts appearing) and Controlado (they have it competely ringed and are working inwards to put it out).
Editorial comment: Nobody was hurt, in fact people’s health was probably improved by the destruction of the junk food…
