Two poachers were seen by the Seprona (Guardia Civil Environmental Department) angling from small boats in the protected area around Punta de la Mona.
The cliffs and seabed around Punta de la Mona within the municipality of Almuñécar/La Herradura, are considered a Zona de Especial Conservación (ZEC). Shellfish harvesting, recreational fishing (on land, by boat and underwater), as well as professional fishing, are strictly prohibited there.

Last Sunday the Seprona unit based in Motril received a tip-off that two people were fishing from boats in the ZEC, so a land patrol was despatched.
The officers were able to confirm from their viewpoint on land the presence of the boats just off the Punta de la Mona with the occupants (one person in each, in the act of fishing just around from the Marina del Este Marina.
They observed that they were using squid and small fish as bait for larger fish and reported the details to the Coast Guard.
As can be seen in the occupying photo, the poachers were later arrested and the catch confiscated.
