Not a Cyber Attack

Nearly 24 hours on from the mass outage, the only thing certain is that it was not a cyber attack, according to Red Electrica or the Spanish Intelligence Services.

Director of operations for the public entity, Red Electrica, Eduardo Prieto, categorically stated, “There was no intrusion behind this incident,” after consulting with Incibel (Instituto Nacional de Ciberseguridad) adding that they were still waiting for further reports to definitively put their finger on the cause of the outage, so that it doesn’t happen again.

According to several sources at the Centro Nacional de Inteligencia (CNI), neither Incibel, nor the Centro Criptológico Nacional, nor the Mando Conjunto del Ciberespacio, belonging to the Department of Defence, have found indications of outside interference to explain the disappearance of 15 gigawatts of power in just five seconds at 12.33h yesterday, which disconnected Spain from Europe.

The Spanish Intelligence Service (CNI) said that any sabotage would have left “an important digital footprint”, which would have quickly been detected.”
