Small Yacht Runs Aground

Saturday saw a small yacht washed up onto a beach near La Rábita, despite a calm sea state but the wind from the east, although not strong, caught the skipper out.

The 55-year-old man at the helm had set out from Motril and was making his way, sailing along the coast, to Adra, near the Almería provincial border.

Lulled by the peaceful sailing, sparkling sea and mild wind, he decided to set the automatic pilot and have a siesta… but the wind veered.

The wind got up, the man continued to snore but the yacht was being carried towards the beach so the first warning he had that things were not going so well on deck was when a wave landed him on the beach with the craft on its side.

Luckily, he was uninjured but the boat was firmly on dry land so it was still there yesterday waiting to be towed off or away, depending on the state of the hull.
