Vets Say No to New Regulations

The Partido Popular (PP) in the city of Granada has requested that the Central Government does not apply the new regulations on antibiotics in veterinary clinics.

We wrote an article on this so you can get some background if you click on the link but basically vets can no longer prescribe antibiotics without going throught a drawn out procedure.

The vet probably knows exactly what needs to be administered to the animal but they have to go through trial periods… by which time the animal could be dead or at the very least, have suffered unnecessarily.

Although the Central Government has brought this into law, it did so to comply with EU legislation, which in turn came about because of the massive misuse of antibiotics which has led to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

“It is not reasonable that vets have to adapt their procedures concerning animal treatment from one day to the next,” reasoned Councillor Lourdes Ramírez, at a meeting with the Chairman of the Colegio Oficial de Farmacéuticos de Granada.

But it’s not only that vets have their hands tied when treating an animal, but also that increased (and unnecessary) paperwork involved.
