Torrox Pet Count

Torrox has followed in the steps of its neighbour Nerja, and has made a list of all registered pets with information from the Colegio de Veterinarios de Málaga.

In a deal signed between the Town Hall and the said College of Veterinary Surgeons, the former will pay 3,000 euros (plus IVA) to the latter each year for the next four years to maintain it up-to-date.

So far the list numbers 5,631 dogs, 213 of which are classified as dangerous breeds, 1,135 cats, eight ferrets and ten other creatures that people consider as pets. Therefore the official total for the pet population stands at 6,784.

The Chairman of the College de Veterinarios de Málaga, Juan Antonio de Luque, handed over five chip readers that will be used by officers belonging to the Policía Local.

Mayor Óscar Medina publicly thanked the Councillor for Agriculture & The Environment, Ana Pérez, emphasising her “great work,” which he says, “guarantees the welfare of animals and the safety of their owners.”

Councillor Ana Pérez said that the Colegio de Veterinarios de Málaga would collaborate in the capture, sterilisation and return of stray cats within the municipality, using non-harmful methods.
