The Almuñécar Councillor for Citizen Safety, Mari Carmen Martín Orce, explained that the local police and fire service were called out 30 times to deal with flooding on the 18th.
The heavy rains fell between Monday night and Tuesday morning leaving residents from both Almuñécar and La Herradura calling in for assistance.

Almuñécar registered 55 litres per square metre (that’s about two inches of rain) leaving rain drains unable to cope with it, in several places in Almuñécar, such as the roundabout at the beach end of Avenida Juan Carlos, Puerta de Mar, Costa de Sol, Calle Príncipe de Asturias, Calle Guadix and the Paseo Miguel Ángel Blanco (between the Rock and where San Cristóbal begins by the river).
Other affected areas were the Calle Huerta de San Ramón and Calle Mar de Plata because the Sandovala Vega couldn’t absorb it fast enough. Fire Personnel were also called out to inspect the cornise (facade overhang) belonging to Collegio Río Verde.
Over in La Herradura, the Rambla de Las Tejas had a car that had to be pulled out. The fire personnel also had to pump out water that had flooded the playground belonging to Colegio Las Gaviotas.
