Many consumers in the Axarquia are going to see a rise of 35% in their water bills after it was approved by the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Oriental-Axarquía.
This increase will affect 14 of the 31 municipalities with the Axarquia; i.e., those that receive their domestic water supply from the water-treatment plant in El Trapiche (Vélez-Málaga).

Those municipalities that are affected are: Almáchar, Benamargosa, Benamocarra, El Borge, Comares, Cútar, Iznate, Macharaviaya, Moclinejo, Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Totalán, Algarrobo and Torrox,.
The total population of the above municipalities is around 180,000 official residents (empadronados) and some 230,000, if you include second-home owners who come in the high season.
According to the Chairman of the Mancomunidad, Jorge Martín (PP) there hasn’t been a rise in price since 2008 for water taken directly from source for water storage and purifying, and since 2018 for recycled water. He warned that if prices were not increased the water-utility company would be in serious economical difficulties.
So what prices are we talking about? The rate will change from 0.4702 euros per cubic metre to 0.4429 euros for direct supply and from 0.4702 to 0.5977 for recycled water.
If you take the average water consumption of ten cubic metres per month, then we are looking at an extra 1.44 euros a month, which will not lead anybody into ruin and destitution, perhaps.
