A man was arrested on Saturday last December in Avilés (Asturias) after having stolen the body of his mother, who died that week, from the parish cemetery.
He took his mother’s remains back to his house with obvious symptoms of agitation; the son; not the mother. The body has since been recovered and was transferred to the La Carriona Morgue awaiting her second burial.
The man set about his task sometime between 13.00h and 15.00h, entering the parish cemetery. He went to the grave of his mother and began shouting that she had been taken from her house without his permission.
Removing by breaking the entrance to the niche to reach the coffin, he somehow managed to drag it into his car. A bystander attempted to dissuade him, but seeing that the son was becoming more and more agitated, he decided to help him load the coffin into the car.
Locals alerted the priest, who was unaware of what had happened. He immediately informed the Policia Nacional of what had occurred. Officers went round to his house and found him at home… with his mother.
He was arrested but released after appearing before a police court and his mother was returned to her niche.
However, no sooner had the man in charge of the cemetery replaced the coffin and walled it in, than he had to break the seal again in order to comply with the court order, which instructed that the body be placed in the above mentioned morgue, as the body had to be identified and a photo of the body taken for judicial purposes.
