On the first day of the year, a driver was suspected of deliberately running into a 20-year-old woman, who consequenty lost a leg.
The incident or accident took place around 07.00h in the morning on Calle Poeta Mira de Amezcua in the Barrio del Zaidín-Vergeles area of the city of Granada.
A police car was parked nearby and its occupants immediately put on their sirens and lights and drove over. The driver, who had two passengers onboard, claimed that it had been an accident.
The victim had been caught between her own car and the oncoming car, crushing her leg, leaving it too badly damaged to be saved and was amputated.
She had been with her boyfriend and another two people, with boyfriend also suffering a fracture. They had just parked and she was standing in front of the car and the boyfriend was taking something out of the boot. The other two were standing on the pavement.
As a result of questioning all involved and eyewitnesses, the police soon came to the conclusion that the incident had been a deliberate act.
The driver has since appeared before a judge who sentenced him to be remanded in custody facing charges on four accounts of attempted murder, two counts of grevious bodily harm, one count of failing to provide assistance and another count of dangerous driving. The two passengers in his car were also arrested for their possible participation but have been released on bail.
Apparently, the suspect had been in search of getting own back against a couple who he had met at a bar and had argued with. Later, with the couple and himself having left the bar, he had driven down this one-way street in the opposite direction, travelling at a considerable speed, where he came across the couple.
Fire personnel had had to separate the two vehicles in order to free her.
