Warmest November

According to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) this November just gone by was the warmest since 1961.

The average temperature was 12.4ºC, which was 2.8ºC above the average for the reference period 1991-2020. It also exceeded by half a degree the warmest November recorded to date, which was in 1983.

Although this 2.8ºC is a very significant deviation, it is not the maximum in the series. The most anomalously warm month was October 2022, with a deviation of 3.4 ºC.

As for rainfall, and despite the second DANA that affected the peninsula in the first half of the month, especially on the Mediterranean side, November was very dry overall, with rainfall that was 40% below normal.

“We do not yet have the final data, but rainfall will probably be around half of what’s normal for that month, which is traditionally the rainiest of the year along with October,” said Aemet spokesman, Rubén del Campo.

“November 2024 has been an extremely warm and very dry month and the transition from November to December has also been very warm with temperatures reaching 32ºC in La Aldea de San Nicolás in Gran Canaria and 29ºC in Coín, province of Málaga, on Saturday the 30th. That day it also reached 24ºC at Bilbao Airport and on Sunday the 1st, it reached 23ºC at San Sebastián Airport; in other words, the northern coast of Spain.

Cooler atmosphere

This week begins with a drop in temperatures and a somewhat cooler atmosphere but true wintery weather is not expected until next weekend (the double, bank-holiday weekend that includes Friday and Monday).
