The proposals by the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) on the permissible totals of captures (CT) with its quotas for 2025 has caused rejection from the Motril fishing sector.
The sector sees a direct threat in the said measures to its future as they reduce fishing quotas and days when fishing is permitted. In fact, they consider that the measures strangle the Motril Fishing Sector already beaten down by the crisis.

The Head of the local Fishermen’s Guild, Ignacio López, considers that the measures are “unsustainable,” pointing to the “severe” restrictions proposed, such as a 30% reduction in the red prawn capture-quota and a drastic decrease of 60% in hake.
Finally, because the maximum sustainable performance objective (MRS) planned for 2025 has not been reached, a 79% reduction in fishing days is proposed.
Consequently, the sector has asked the European Commission to “withdraw” this proposal, suggesting instead a viable alternative that allows Motril to maintain its present fishing activity. The main request is to conserve the status quo for 2025, avoiding changes that can further damage the sector, the Head of the Motril Fishermen’s Guild explained
