The 14 -year -old girl who last Friday reported having been the victim of a kidnapping and sexual assault in Leioa has admitted that she invented the whole thing before the police.

The minor returned yesterday afternoon to give a statement to the Basque Police accompanied by her parents and ended up confessing that nothing had happened. She decided to come clean after the interviewing officer informed her that they were beginning to detect inconsistencies in her statement.

The girl, who lives in Getxo (Basque Lands) was found by a couple wandering on the road leading down from the university around 20.00h on Friday. She wasn’t wearing any shoes or a coat.

The couple phoned the emergency services as she appeared to very upset. The police took her to hospital to be examined by a forensic doctor.

According to the girl’s original statement, a man who she hadn’t met before had forced her into his car in the area of Artaza around four in the afternoon. He took her to a garage used as a storeroom and undressed her and began molesting her. Afterwards he forced her back into the car and then let her go on the road where the couple later found her.

She gave a brief description of her supposed assailant and his car.

At first officers believed her account but there were things that didn’t fit, leading them to believe that she was holding back. They were sure, however, that something had happened to her, so they launched an investigation, sparing no resources, because the ‘assailant’ was still at large.

Since Friday the police had access to footage from several CCTV cameras, but there was no trace of the girl’s encounter with the alleged assailant. Under further questioning with her parents present she broke down and confessed that she had made it all up.

Editorial comment: something obviously had happened to her but whatever it was, she preferred lying before the police rather than saying what had actually happened for her to be wandering down a road, barefooted and without a coat in the cold temperatures of Spain’s northern coast.
