At least two men were killed when a train hit a car on a level crossing yesterday morning in Palencia (Castilla-León).
The high-speed train (Alvia 04273) was on the Madrid-Santander run when it came across the vehicle on crossing with no barriers – Spain has quite a few in rural areas.
The train driver, with 92 passengers onboard, was unable to bring the train to a halt before hitting the car. None of thepassengers was injured.
The accident occurred around 09.55h. One body was recovered from the wreckage of the car and the body of another man was found lying next to the track after having been thrown clear by the impact.
Both victims were construction workers employed on maintenance tasks on the high-speed-train tracks
